Protective function.
The skin protects the body from external damage and bacterial penetration, protects internal organs from the chemical reactions and agressive environment. The outer layer of the epidermis is covered with a thin film of fat, impermeable to water. Skin regulates the temperature fluctuations, acts as an elastic physical protection and coverage of tissues inside and all the body organs, protects from injuries, active substances, micro-organisms, etc. It is the primary barrier, through which we respond to the environment. Moreover, solar light induced photochemical reaction in the skin produces vitamin D - that’s the primary source of this vitamin for our body.
Receptive function.
By means of extensive network of sensory receptors we get pressure, texture, temperature and pain sensation. Sensitive nerve limb irritation signals are transmitted to the nerve fibers of the brain and spinal cord, body response occurs in response the body’s response to irritation factor. Sensitive nerve endings, which is responsible for tactile and pressure reactions, are proved to be extremely close to the hair follicles.
Termoregulative function.
This skin function protects the body from the harmful effects of environmental factors, skin’s melanin pigment protects from ultraviolet spectrum surplus. Healthy people have a constant body temperature. In case of environmental changes in temperature turns on the body (large blood vessels and sweat glands network) adaptation response - such as body temperature decreases with the liquid form sweat evaporation from the skin surface.
Excretive function.
With sweat the body loses large amounts of water, salts and other chemicals - removes unnecessary material.
Secretive function.
Skin fatty glands discharge skin fat, that acts towards hair and skin elasticity and softness. During emotional stress the fat gland secretion increases, and it’s composition changes.
Absorptive function.
Some substances may enter the body through the skin. Research has shown that some cosmetic fats may get deep into the skin through the hair follicles and fat glands opening channels (skin, wrinkle, eye, body, scalp creams, etc.). Biologically active substances in cosmetic creams must be used with caution as they can harm your body.
