Irons

Over the years technology brought us some styling tools to make doing our hair easier and more convenient. Those are primarily curling and flat irons. The curling iron (and hot rollers) are designed for adding curl in a hurry, while flat irons came out evenntually with straight styles becoming fashionable as everyone wanted that smooth sleek locks. However, as convenient and helpful as these appliances are, they can be damaging to your hair if you don’t use them properly:
  • Curling Iron is a great hairstyling aid that can add curl, body and bend to the hair when used properly. There are even special curling irons that can add spirals and zig zags to your hair. The curling iron’s barrel comes in several sizes, small for tight curls and large for bouncy curls. When you use a curling iron, the most important thing to remember is your hair must be dry. Using your curling iron on wet hair will result in fried-limp hair. If you’re worried about burning your hair even slightly, there are thermal protection products that can help prevent burnt hair. If you have short hair, the best way to curl hair is to start at the crown. If you have medium to long hair, it’s better to start at the back of the head. To begin, separate hair into 1” to 2” sections and start from the tip of the hair and roll the iron until it is about an inch from the scalp. If you’re worried about burning yourself, slide a comb in between the curling iron and your scalp. Hold the iron in the hair for about 10 seconds and then carefully open the curling iron and release the curl. Continue to repeat this for the remaining sections of hair that you wish to curl. If you’re hair is long, you may want to pin the curl with a bobby pin against the head before doing the rest of your hair. Once the curls have cooled, you can use a holding spray to set the look and then unpin and style the curls using your fingers. If you find yourself using a curling iron on a regular basis, make sure that you add extra conditioning to your hair to prevent heat damage. If you’re not planning to curl the ends of your hair such spiral curling, you should avoid using the curling iron clamp. Using the clamp can result in dead ends and tons of frizz. Instead, wrap each section of hair around the barrel of the iron and hold for 10 seconds and then carefully release the curl. Finally, if you’re going for soft curls, you might want to opt for hot rollers instead. Hot Rollers offer a variety of sizes and can be used to create longer lasting curls, with less frizz and damage compared to a curling iron. No matter if you use hot rollers or a curling iron, both can give you a brand new look in a matter of moments and create a glamorous look for that special evening. So curling irons are perfect for giving you the volume and body you desire. However, this popular styling tool isn’t invincible. If you’ve found yourself going through 2-3 curling irons a year, chances are it’s a human error and neglect that is wearing down your curling iron sooner than expected. Many women use hair sprays, gel and other substances on their hair to help protect it from the heat while curling it. This is fine but when those substances come into contact with your curling iron, the combination of heat and spray/gel can damage it, resulting in burnt, crusty residue on the curling iron itself. If enough accumulates on your curling iron, this can affect the way it curls your hair. To avoid this, wipe down your curling iron with a dry or slightly damp towel or cloth after each use. If you find that your curling iron’s grip isn’t as tight as it used to be, check the screws on the side of the iron. Using applied pressure over time can cause the screws to become lose, causing the lack of grip on the hair. Try using a small screwdriver to tighten the screws and see if that helps instead before tossing it for another one.
  • Flat iron could be included with curling iron and hot rollers, except that there is one mistake commonly made when using a flat iron, that isn’t applicable with the other two heated appliances. Like the curling iron and hot rollers, the hair must be completely dry before using the flat iron, and you will get better results if you use a styling product as well. However, the most common mistake women make when using the flat iron is in the way they dry their hair. Many women think that since they will be straightening the hair with a flat iron, they only need to concern themselves with getting the hair dry. But if you blow dry the hair straight before using the flat iron, you will find you get much better results. Another mistake women make when using a flat iron is overloading the iron. They try to pass too much hair through the iron at a given time. All this does is create uneven heating and uneven tension, both of which lead to uneven straightening and can cause damage to the hair on the outsides of the section being straightened because the first impulse is to leave the iron in place longer. The sections being pressed should be no thicker than 1/8th of an inch or 3mm. Take the slice of hair, slide it between the pressing plates, position the iron at the scalp, press together and slide the iron down to the ends in a smooth, even motion. This may mean that flat ironing your hair takes longer than before, but the results will be well worth it. Taking care of your flat iron is the same as caring for a curling iron. Since many flat irons have different types of attachment plates, make it a habit of removing them from the iron after it has cooled off and clean them thoroughly. Remove any hairs that have been snagged and don’t allow stray hairs to burn onto the attachment. Read your manual for the suggested cleaning methods and always make sure the flat iron has been unplugged and is completely cooled off before attempting to clean it. Instead of using water and soap to clean your styling tools, which can cause a fire hazard, use a damp or dry cloth or towel and avoid using cleaning substances that contain harsh chemicals, as this can cause more harm than good.
